Like optically enlarge the space?

Micro-apartments, studios and studio flats are not very adaptable spaces that pose a problem when arranging. Nevertheless, a modest space has many advantages: it is cosy, easy to maintain and facilitates minimalism. Fortunately, there are a few tried-and-tested tricks to deceive the eye and make even small rooms appear more spacious.

Magic mirrors

It is not only an elegant decorative element, but also the simplest way to optically enlarge a space. The effect created by the surface of the mirror influences human perception in the following ways:

  • extends short corridors;
  • widens narrow spaces;
  • suspended from the ceiling makes the room appear taller;
  • creates a depth effect.

The correction of proportions is possible if the mirror is used correctly in the interior. It should be placed on the right walls and at the right distance from the floor. An interesting solution is to place two mirrors opposite each other. By reflecting and multiplying details, the room appears even larger.

A very practical solution is to mount a mirror on the front door of the wardrobe. However, the best results are obtained by combining the strength of the mirror and the window openings - the reflected light additionally brightens up the room.

Read more lights

A room can grow in appearance and become more cheerful once it is sufficiently bright. If you do not have large windows in your flat and the supply of natural light is limited, you should choose artificial lighting accordingly.

It should be both general and spot-lit, i.e. focused on a specific point in the room, for example the ceiling. The main lighting can be supplemented with pendant and floor lamps, as well as diffuse LED strips that can be placed in recesses or furniture.

Sometimes it is worth considering dispensing with overhead lighting, as large, ornate chandeliers in small rooms reduce the height of the room. It is best to opt for clear glass lamps and light lampshades, as these will add lightness to the entire room.

Power colours

A well-known and basic rule is that dark colours optically make a space smaller, while light colours make it larger, as they reflect light better and are not overwhelming. The range of colours with which we can cover the walls in a small room is very wide - we can choose from white, beige, ivory, shades of grey, light blue or powder pink.

What's more, bright colours go very well with contrasting or flashy design accents. They give the interior an original touch, so there is no need to fear that a muted colour scheme will make our flat bland.

To make the room appear taller, you can paint the ceiling in a shade that is lighter than the walls. It is best to opt for a maximum of three colours in one interior. When looking for decorative elements, it is advisable to decide on those that are punctuated with a large amount of white.
