10 tips when designing a spacious living room

The living room is the focal point of every home - a space where we spend time with family, relax and invite guests. The right arrangement allows not only to improve the functionality, but also to optically enlarge the room. In this article, we will suggest how to design a living room that is both spacious and aesthetically pleasing.

Did you know that bright colours can visually increase a space by as much as 30%?

Here are our 10 proven tips.

Minimalism - the basis of spaciousness

Minimalism is a style that works well in living room design. An excess of decoration, furniture or small elements can overwhelm the space. Therefore, it is advisable to keep furnishings to the necessary minimum and choose furniture with a light form.

Go for simplicity - choose some functional furniture that fully suits your needs. A sofa on legs, a small coffee table and subtle accessories will create a feeling of spaciousness. This will also give you more free space to move around freely.

Optimal furniture layout

The correct arrangement of furniture is key to creating a spacious and comfortable space. It's a good idea to start by designating a focal point - this could be the TV, fireplace or coffee table. Around this point, organise the rest of the arrangement, ensuring convenient access to each element.

Avoid obstructing passageways or cramped furniture placement. Pay attention to proportions - small furniture works better in small living rooms, while larger ones can afford more prominent pieces. It is important to keep the right distances between different pieces of furniture.

Bright colours - optical zoom

Colours have a huge impact on the perception of a space. Light colours such as white, beige or pastels make an interior appear larger and more open. Opt for light-coloured walls and ceiling to optically raise the height of the room.

However, you don't have to give up on stronger accents. Darker colours can be used in accessories such as cushions, pictures or carpets to add character to the interior. The important thing is that the overall effect is harmonious and not overpowering.

Light - natural and artificial

Lighting plays a key role in the design of a spacious living room. Natural light is the best way to optically enlarge a room. Large windows, light curtains and no heavy curtains are essential elements to help make the most of the potential of natural lighting.

Artificial lighting is worth planning in layers. In addition to the ceiling lamp, invest in floor lamps, table lamps and LED strips. The latter are great for illuminating alcoves or shelves, adding a modern touch to the interior.

Mirrors - a simple way to go deep

Mirrors are one of the easiest ways to optically enlarge an interior. Placed opposite a window, they will reflect light and create the illusion of extra space. Choose large mirrors with simple frames that blend in with the arrangement.

If you don't want to introduce large elements, choose furniture with mirrored fronts or decorations with glossy surfaces. The effect will be subtle but noticeable.

Separate functional areas

Dividing the living room into zones is a practical solution that allows for better use of space. Separate a lounge area, a dining area or a work corner. Each of these zones should be clearly defined, but at the same time coherent with the whole. Carpets are a great way to visually separate the different areas. You can also use different light sources for each zone, which will add depth to the interior.

Appropriate additives

Accessories play an important role in your living room décor, but use moderation so they don't overwhelm the space. Opt for a few distinctive but subtle accents that coordinate with the rest of the décor.

When choosing decorations, opt for larger pieces that provide a focal point, such as an elegant painting, a large vase or a stylish potted plant. With such accents, the interior will look fuller and the space will not lose its openness.

Furniture multifunctional

Multifunctional furniture is a great solution for any living room, regardless of its size. They allow you to save space while enjoying full functionality. Sofas with storage bins, fold-out coffee tables or bookcases with hidden storage are great examples of furniture that add convenience to your living room.

Multifunctional furniture is also the ideal solution if you change your arrangement frequently. They make it easier for you to adapt the space to suit your current needs - for example, organising a space for remote working or entertaining if necessary.

Textiles - subtle elegance

Textiles are the element that brings cosiness and warmth to the living room. When choosing the right textiles, it is worth opting for natural materials such as cotton, linen or wool, which are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Well-chosen textiles can emphasise the character of a room and add elegance to it.

Remember not to overdo the amount of textiles. In a spacious living room, simpler patterns and bright colours will work better. Large cushions, floor-length curtains or soft blankets will add warmth without overwhelming the space.

Plants - life in space

Plants are one of the easiest ways to liven up a living room and give it a cosy feel. Green accents not only improve the aesthetics, but also the air quality. Plants with large leaves are great in the living room to bring harmony and balance.

When choosing plants, be mindful of their placement. Large plants are best placed in the corners of the room and smaller plants on shelves or tables. This arrangement will allow you to use the space effectively and bring balance to the interior.
